Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef, pork, or a mix (you can also use diced meat if you prefer)
- 4-5 large potatoes (peeled and thinly sliced)
- 1 cup mushrooms (sliced, any variety)
- 1 large onion (chopped)
- 3 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
- 1 cup sour cream or heavy cream
- 1/2 cup beef or chicken broth
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp dried thyme or oregano
- 1 tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley (chopped, for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Meat Mixture:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground meat to the skillet and cook until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the sliced mushrooms and cook until they are tender, about 5 minutes.
- Season with dried thyme or oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.
2. Prepare the Potatoes:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Thinly slice the potatoes into rounds. You can use a mandoline for even slices if you have one.
3. Assemble the Casserole:
- In a greased baking dish, arrange a layer of potato slices at the bottom.
- Spread half of the meat and mushroom mixture over the potatoes.
- Add another layer of potato slices on top of the meat.
- Spread the remaining meat mixture over this layer.
- Finish with a final layer of potato slices on top.
4. Prepare the Cream Sauce:
- In a bowl, mix together the sour cream or heavy cream with the beef or chicken broth. Season with salt and pepper.
- Pour the cream mixture evenly over the casserole.
5. Bake the Casserole:
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheese on top.
- Bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the potatoes are tender (you can test with a fork).
6. Serve:
- Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
